Trudon: the candle maker of Kings and Queens celebrates French heritage

Have you ever wondered how the Château de Versailles smelled, or what fragrance filled the gardens of Marie Antoinette? To find out, step inside the stunning Trudon boutique and experience one of France’s most legendary maisons, the candle maker of kings and queens.

Founded in 1643, Maison Trudon began its remarkable story when Claude Trudon, owner of a boutique on Paris’s rue Saint-Honoré, developed his craft as a grocer and candle-maker, supplying wax candles to churches and parishes. His exceptional craftsmanship soon attracted the attention of the French Royal family, and Trudon became the official supplier to the Court of Versailles, creating candles that illuminated some of France’s most celebrated palaces and royal residences.

For centuries, candlelight was at the heart of French royal life, shaping the atmosphere of grand salons, private chambers and gardens after sunset. Trudon’s creations became part of this world of elegance, ceremony and refinement. More than three hundred years later, Maison Trudon remains the epitome of French luxury, craftsmanship and heritage. The brand has managed to preserve the art of candle-making while continuing to reinvent fragrance, diffusers, decorations and collectors’ objects.

A visit to the Trudon boutique, in Covent Garden, is an invitation to experience French history through one of our most powerful senses. Each fragrance evokes a place, a personality or a moment in time, recalling another French classic, Proust’s madeleine. The space feels less like a traditional shop and more like a private collector’s salon with stunning paintings on the walls. Every detail reflects Trudon’s artistry, from the charming displays of candles and perfumes to the carefully curated objects surrounding them. The boutique honours a broader vision of Frenchness, one rooted in literature, art and the pleasure of living beautifully. Carefully selected books, including works by French author Daniel Pennac, ‘Merci’, create an atmosphere closer to an elegant Parisian home than a conventional retail space.

Today, Maison Trudon continues to evolve under a new creative vision. In March 2025, Hugo Ferroux was appointed Artistic Director of Maison Trudon and Carrière Frères, bringing with him a unique understanding of decorative arts and sophistication. After studying fashion at Studio Berçot, he began his career at Mugler as assistant to the artistic director before joining Saint Laurent in 2013, during the era of Hedi Slimane.

Over eleven years at the Parisian fashion house, Ferroux worked closely with Anthony Vaccarello on numerous projects, including the creation of the Saint Laurent Rive Droite concept stores, innovative spaces that transformed retail into cultural experiences, merging fashion, art, design and objects. As creative director, he developed a meticulous approach to creating environments where storytelling and aesthetics became inseparable. What a career so far! Beginning with collections from January 2026, Ferroux’s interpretation of the maison brings a contemporary perspective to its centuries-old history, continuing the dialogue between tradition and innovation.

The brand already had affinities with fashion through collaborations, most notably its partnership with Italian designer Giambattista Valli. His romantic and colorful universe had been translated into fragrance through creations such as Positano and Rose Poivre. These collaborations reflect Trudon’s ability to move beyond traditional candle-making, creating objects that exist at the intersection of fragrance and fashion.

At the heart of Maison Trudon lies its most precious material: wax. Since 1901, the maison’s historic factory has been located in Mortagne-au-Perche, Normandy, within the Perche Regional Nature Park. Surrounded by protected landscapes, the factory continues to preserve traditional expertise while respecting the environment and supporting biodiversity. Cire, a dedicated olfactory tribute to these origins as the Royal Wax Manufacturer, celebrates this very material at the heart of the maison, honouring its beauty and purity.

Inside the London boutique, store manager and expert Michel guides clients through the extensive collection like a storyteller, helping them understand the character and atmosphere behind each creation. For those discovering Trudon for the first time, he begins with the softer compositions before gradually introducing the more powerful scents. As he invites visitors to explore the deeper, more dramatic fragrances that reveal the full personality of the maison, he uses a simple phrase: “Let’s put the volume up.” which sums up the amazing experience.

The meticulously-presented offering features the Candles collection, showcasing scented candles, alabasters and their refills, taper candles, pillar candles, accessories, and curated gift sets. The Interior collection rounds out the home experience with diffusers and refills, room sprays, La Promeneuse and her companion cameos, and the signature historical busts. The brand also presents the complete Eau de Parfum collection, each fragrance created with the expertise of a Master Perfumer.

Through this portfolio, clients can chart a sensory map of French history and distant landscapes. Marie Antoinette draws from the delicate details of the legendary queen’s world, including the roses and raspberries found in her couturier’s creations. Tuileries recreates the atmosphere of the famous Parisian gardens, evoking elegant walks beneath carefully arranged trees and the symmetry of French garden design. Joséphine recalls the gardens of Joséphine Bonaparte at Château de Malmaison, capturing her passion for botany with a romantic blend of roses and jasmine. Madeleine captures a delicate, classic French elegance, while Odalisque pays tribute to the decorative arts through its luminous and graceful character.

When Michel “puts the volume up,” visitors encounter the house’s more opulent, structural compositions. Solis Rex feels like stepping directly into Versailles, evoking the Hall of Mirrors with rich woody notes that mimic polished parquet floors and majestic royal interiors. Spiritus Sancti transports visitors into a sacred space filled with incense and candle smoke, recalling centuries of church rituals and prayers. Absolu expands the perfume collection with an intense homage to Louis XIV, celebrating his power through the richness of orange blossom absolute, one of haute parfumerie’s most iconic flowers. Simply stunning! Beyond France, Ernesto journeys to Havana with notes of leather and tobacco, evoking warm evenings and old libraries. Finally, Abd El Kader offers a completely different journey inspired by Moroccan mint tea and the tradition of hospitality, blending spices, and aromatic notes.

Less known, Trudon also features the best fragrances. Mystique, created by master perfumer, Émilie Bouge for the very chic Nuit Rouge range, is an intense, woody fragrance inspired by ritual and magic, blending smoky oud, refined amber, and rare leather. Other highlights from the gorgeous Rouge selection include Midnight Omen, a richly layered woody amber fragrance that is both enigmatic and bold, it hints at omens, good or bad, and keeps the wearer guessing as each note whispers a secret of seduction through a powerful composition that opens with bright mandarin, unfolds into a heart of iris and violet, and settles on a base of suede-like leather and rare Nepalese sandalwood. Completing this intense trilogy alongside Midnight Omen and the aforementioned Mystique is 45°, an ultra-addictive amber vanilla composition formulated by perfumer Yann Vasnier. Flirting with a rising temperature, this original fragrance suggests passion and desire, building its sensuality around a trio of vanilla that unleashes the passions and reveals carnal facets through an audacious, playful reinterpretation that brings an unexpected twist to the voluptuousness of a light, already delicious vanilla absolute, beautifully balanced by a honey accord and warm benzoin.

Bouge also designed best-seller Carmen, a sensual concentrated Parfum that acts as a sister scent to Ernesto, transforming tobacco, rum, leather, and patchouli into a rich, evolving skin fragrance with modern elegance. Also available in the Soap range, the fragrance is housed in luxurious, refillable 350ml bottles inspired by 18th-century European royal toiletries, designed specifically to bring a dedicated olfactory signature to the bathroom or washroom experience.

Lastly, from the elegant Black range is Mortel Noir is an intensely spiced, highly concentrated (27%) true Parfum inspired by the original Mortel Eau de Parfum. Driven by raw energy and designed to evoke the warmth of skin contact, this powerful and long-lasting fragrance opens with electrifying Madagascar black pepper before unfolding into a vibrant, mystical heart of Somali incense, myrrh, and benzoin. It settles into a magnetic base of cistus and labdanum absolute, creating a wild, and sensual feeling.

Trudon’s relationship with French history also extends into the world of art. The maison was granted the rights to reproduce famous historical busts originally created by the Manufacture Royale de Cire, preserving the memory of important figures from French culture. Among them is a miniature reproduction of François Girardon’s monumental sculpture Louis XIV à cheval, originally displayed at Place Vendôme in 1699 before being destroyed during the French Revolution. Other wax busts on display in the boutique include representations of Napoleon, as well as Louise and Alexandre, children of architect Alexandre-Théodore Brongniart.

The dialogue with contemporary artists extends to a partnership with British painter and illustrator Lawrence Mynott, who created original drawings, appearing on the brand’s packaging and digital platforms. A graduate of Chelsea School of Art and the Royal College of Art, Mynott’s work reflects Trudon’s enduring relationship between scent, art and storytelling. In reference to the Surrealist movement, Dada is another iconic candle…

For those looking to transform their interiors through scent and style, Trudon’s decorative collection blends old-world opulence with contemporary refinement. Each piece extends the Maison’s 17th-century heritage beyond fragrance, becoming a celebration of art de vivre. The Ex Voto candle reinterprets the historic symbol of devotion and gratitude as a striking waxen piece, available in timeless shades of Noir, Rose, and Pierre. The Turtle Pedestal, created with art historian and Turkish creative director Serdar Gülgün, evokes the splendour of Constantinople and the Ottoman tradition of candlelit turtle gardens at Topkapi Palace. Completing the collection, the Bee Candle Topper celebrates one of Trudon’s oldest emblems, while preserving the candle’s exceptional fragrance as part of an elegant daily ritual.

Speaking of bees, Trudon continues its commitment to preserving local heritage and biodiversity through its support of the Orne Dark Bee Conservatory. Dedicated to safeguarding this rare, resilient, and native pollinator species, the Maison contributes to the survival of the Dark Bee through the Cire collection, with 4% of sales donated to the Conservatory. A gesture that reflects Trudon’s enduring connection to craftsmanship, nature, and the preservation of living traditions.

Whether delicate or powerful, each Trudon candle, fragrance, diffuser and objet d’art, transforms fragrance into an art form, a way of travelling through French classicism, style and narrative without ever leaving the room. This centuries-old savoir-faire extends beyond the boutique into some of London’s most prestigious hotels, including Claridge’s (where Cire has been specially selected) and The Connaught, where Trudon’s fragrances become a seamless part of an atmosphere defined by discretion, hospitality, and timeless luxury. Truly remarkable and worth many visits!
