Singer and activist Patti Smith was invited by Artangel to read excerpts of Oscar Wilde’s 100-page letter De Profundis, which he wrote during his two-year incarceration in the Reading Prison, the atmospheric setting for Artangel’s latest exhibition. The prison reopened for the first time for this exciting exhibition. Patti Smith continues the programme which includes performances by Neil Bartlett, Ralph Fiennes, Kathryn Hunter, Ragnar Kjartansson, Maxine Peake, Lemn Sissay, Colm Tóibín, and Ben Whishaw alongside works by Marlene Dumas, Nan Goldin and Ai Weiwei.

“In the great prison where I was then incarcerated, I was merely the figure and the letter of a little cell in a long gallery. One of a thousand lifeless numbers, as of a thousand lifeless lives”. – Oscar Wilde, De Profundis
