In November 2017, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France and the Opéra National de Paris celebrated director, performer and filmmaker Patrice Chéreau’s (1944-2013) oeuvre with a grand exhibition presented at Palais Garnier. It coincided with the revival of his version of Leoš Janáček’s From the House of the Dead staged at the Opéra Bastille.
This rich exhibition catalogue demonstrates Chéreau’s talent through archival material gathered from the collections of the BnF, the IMEC and private collections (manuscripts, correspondence, drawings, models, photographs …). The book immerses readers into Chéreau’s outstanding creative process.
With eleven productions, Chéreau brought new life to opera production, from brilliantly briefing actors, choosing costumes, to sharpening his vision for stage sets, roles, music conductors etc. After a successful debut at the Spoleto Festival and the Paris Opera, he made his mark on the international scene with a historical production of Wagner’s The Ring of Nibelung directed by Pierre Boulez.
