North: Fashioning identity at Somerset House
What do Paul Smith, Joy Division and Ben Kelly have in common? The north of England of course! Somerset House presents North: Fashioning Identity until 4 February 2018, an exhibition which expands on a show first seen at Liverpool’s Open Eye Gallery. It showcases the artistic visualisation of the north of England, a region and a culture which continue to inspire fashion designers artists today (remember Burberry’s latest exhibition in London?).
Modern photography is mixed with archival materials, social documentaries and fashion designs to depict people’s lifestyle and realities alongside a series of events including talks and film screenings.
The exhibition features over 100 photographs, fashion garments and artworks from famous photographers, designers and artists including Alasdair McLellan, Corinne Day, Mark Leckey, Jeremy Deller, Alice Hawkins, Raf Simons, Paul Smith, Off White’s Virgil Abloh, Peter Saville, Stephen Jones, Gareth Pugh, Nick Knight, Glen Luchford, Jamie Hawkesworth, plus the likes of Shirley Baker, John Bulmer and Peter Mitchell.
