Marcos Morau to reimagine David Bowie’s work in a new production

The enduring legacy of David Bowie will inspire a major new dance production by Spanish choreographer Marcos Morau. A Dance for David Bowie (working title) brings together Sadler’s Wells in London, Tokyo’s Bunkamura and Morau’s company La Veronal to explore the transformative power of identity, creativity and reinvention.

The production will premiere in Luxembourg in spring 2028, followed by its UK premiere at Sadler’s Wells Theatre in autumn 2028 and its Asian premiere in Tokyo in spring 2029.

From Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane to the Thin White Duke and Blackstar, Bowie continually reinvented himself while exploring the same philosophical themes, blurring the boundaries between music, fashion, theatre and visual art. Morau will translate this process of artistic transformation into movement, sound and theatrical imagery, examining the cycle of creation, destruction and rebirth that defined the musician’s career.

“Bowie practised a form of artistic reincarnation,” says Morau, who sees the artist’s successive personas as a powerful expression of the freedom to become someone entirely new. The production will combine Bowie’s iconic songs and original vocals with international choral sounds and the voice of acclaimed vocalist María Arnal. Musical direction will be led by Alex Röser Vatiché and Ben Meerwein of OZCUR, with costumes by Silvia Delagneau and set design by Max Glaenzel.

Known for his visually striking productions, Morau has established La Veronal as one of Europe’s leading contemporary dance companies. His work has been presented internationally and developed with institutions including the Paris Opera Ballet and Nederlands Dans Theater.

More than a tribute to a musical icon, A Dance for David Bowie promises to explore reinvention as an artistic act and a way of understanding identity. Casting and further production details will be announced in due course.
