Last week, coinciding with Frieze Week, the opening of Ryoji Ikeda’s data-cosm [n°1] brought together experimental sound, digital art and performance at 180 Studios in London, with a live performance by Michèle Lamy and the Japanese artist. The perfect opening for Frieze!
Running from 14 October to 20 December 2026, the exhibition immersed visitors in Ikeda’s audiovisual universe, where light, sound and scientific data converged. Drawing on information spanning particle physics, mathematics and astrophysics, the installation transformed complex scientific structures into an immersive sensory experience, moving between the microscopic and the cosmic through rhythm, repetition and scale.
For the opening party, Ikeda joined Lamy on stage for a raw, visceral performance. Their collaboration brought together Lamy’s expressive presence and Ikeda’s precise, data-driven soundscapes, creating an arresting encounter between human expression and digital abstraction.
The space was dressed in red neon light, setting a striking atmosphere for the evening, while a generous buffet of chocolate cakes and Parmigiano offered a warm, welcoming touch. Among those attending was Rick Owens, adding to the evening’s gathering of figures from across art, fashion and music.
The collaboration extended beyond the live performance with the release of Michèle Lamy x Ryoji Ikeda, a limited-edition record published by The Vinyl Factory. Featuring two collaborative tracks, the release captured another dimension of the artists’ shared exploration of sound. The vinyl was available exclusively from the 180 Studios exhibition shop and online via The Vinyl Factory.
Presented at a venue dedicated to contemporary art, music and visual culture, data-cosm [n°1] reflected Ikeda’s ongoing investigation into the structures underpinning the universe. His distinctive visual language transformed the gallery into an environment where digital precision met sensory intensity, inviting audiences to experience scientific data beyond its conventional representation.
Bringing Lamy’s performance into this setting, the opening night united contemporary art, experimental music and fashion in an evening that extended beyond the exhibition itself.
RYOJI IKEDA: data-cosm [n°1] is on view at 180 Studios, 6 Surrey Street, London WC2R 2ND, until 20 December 2026. The limited-edition Michèle Lamy x Ryoji Ikeda vinyl is available from the exhibition shop and online via The Vinyl Factory.
