The reopening of the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at Portland State University (Oregon, USA) will feature Claire’s Tabouret’s Mirrors & Reflections, as part of its Masterworks on Loan series.
Painting has provided the artist a more subtle approach to representing identity through her own portraits. A contrast to many of Tabouret’s confident and heroic characters, the new work along with Self-portrait (hand) reveals a more fragile, doubtful figure.
In Self-portrait (orange), Tabouret’s method of building the work with layers of neon underpainting creates a sense of light that emanates from within the subject, depicting herself as a strong and self-assured character amongst her more insecure counterparts.
These works, which were made prior to the beginning of the COVID-19 lockdown, take on a new meaning in time of solitude and isolation.
