Balthus at Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid

Following its presentation at the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen/Basel, the exhibition brings together more than fifty paintings by Polish-French artist Balthus from various eras of his career. Balthus himself named some of his influences derived from the tradition of art history, ranging from Piero della Francesca to Caravaggio, Poussin, Géricault and Courbet. The starting point of the show is his Passage du Commerce-Saint-André (1952–54), a monumental work which encapsulates the artist’s intense engagement with ideas of space and time.
