In the 1989 essay Beauty is the Mystery of Life Agnes Martin wrote, “Composition is an absolute mystery. It is dictated by the mind. The artist searches for certain sounds or lines that are acceptable to mind and finally an arrangement of them that is acceptable.” Martin’s work is recognized as pure abstraction, in which space, metaphysics and internal emotional states are explored through painting, drawing and printmaking.
Running until 7 October 2018, The Gallery, Winchester’s Discovery Centre presents ARTIST ROOMS: Agnes Martin, a selection of paintings which demonstrate Martin’s interest in lines, colours and grids. Highlights include On a Clear Day (1973), a series of thirty screen prints that marked Martin’s return to making art after a five-year hiatus.
