When in Thailand: stay at the idyllic Panviman Chiangmai Spa Resort

Panviman Chiangmai Spa Resort is the most charming and picturesque hotel located in the Chiang Mai region. It deserves all its awards, from the World Luxury Hotel, TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence to the Thailand Tourism Award, received twice. On arrival you’ll be welcomed by amusing sculptures of monkeys dotted in the majestic trees around the grandiose entrance and the breath-taking views over the Mae Rim Valley. Panviman juxtaposes architectural elements of Thailand’s classic Ayuttaya era with local Lanna pieces. Complimentary shuttle service to and from Chiang Mai is available, especially if you’re dying to visit the many art galleries including Ne’na Contemporary Art Space, or MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum. But rest assured you will not want to escape the Panviman Spa Resort, an oasis of calm and luxury.

Bob de Jong, General Manager ensures that the service and the quality of the hotel remains the best and this sets Panviman Chiangmai Spa Resort apart from its competitors. The personal approach plays a big part in the excellence of the service. Back from a recent trip to Amsterdam (where he visited the Van Gogh Museum) and a Thai-art collector himself, he gives more insights on the resort: “Panviman means ‘Paradise’ in Thai, but you will find out what the meaning of this is, only by experiencing our resort(s). The “soul” of the hotel is our people, our mostly local and non-local staff and our guests.”

Located an hour by car (around 30 km) from the chaotic and busy centre of Chiang Mai, Panviman Spa Resort is the perfect setting for a relaxing, romantic or sporty retreat. Nestled over a jungle-clad hillside, North East of the Doi Suthep Park, on the tourist trail and very close to the Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden and the Mong Hilltribe Village, the four-star property offers 55 rooms with private balcony, daybed, a flat-screen TV, minibar, free wi-fi throughout, air conditioning, daily housekeeping, and all the modern facilities you may need. You’ll be taken to your room on a buggy and that’s where the excitement starts!

For more privacy, guests can choose one of the seven Jacuzzi Villas, boasting terraces, decks and outside tables, some of which also feature (cherry on the cake) private pools. You wouldn’t need a private pool though, because at the heart of the property sit three very impressive and gorgeous infinity pools with theatrical elephant-decorated fountains and beautiful turquoise tiles, referenced in the bathroom of the Jacuzzi Villas. All rooms have slippers, colourful Thai-styled baskets, and gorgeous kimonos to make your stay very comfortable.

“Our most significant asset is our location – away from the hustle and bustle of Chiang Mai in the Maerim mountains, overlooking the valley – combined with excellence of comfort, service and food.” Panorama Restaurant, with stunning views over rice fields and beautiful verdant forest, serves fantastic Thai and International cuisines. Breakfast is also fantastic and doesn’t disappoint. A nearby organic garden sources vegetables used by the chef to prepare the delicious meals.

“Panviman Chiang Mai Resort & Spa has been majestically designed to fit in with Thai Lanna Style. You can see this from far away, at some point when you are close to the resort you will see our buildings set against the mountain.” Bob de Jong added about the impressive architecture of the resort which boasts dark wood pillars and furniture, elegant orchid arrangements and a temple dedicated to Buddha. The Chiang Mai region is historically known for teak wood and it is felt through the elegant touches in the lobby and the rooms, including the spectacular sink of the Villa’s bathrooms.

Panviman Chiangmai Spa Resort is part of a chain of two hotels. “Our owner is very much involved in the design of the resorts. It is praised by celebrities including Thai VIPs who have stayed at the resort.”

Further impressive features include an unusual and impressive meditation cave, a very modern gym, marvellous lily ponds, jogging tracks, a mini-golf course, giant chess, pool table, and archery. All these activities are perfect for families and children including the three-gigantic swimming pools. If you’re in a hurry to the airport and forgot to buy presents, a shop is also available near the lobby of the hotel which is very convenient.

Another highlight of the Panviman Resort is the wonderful exotic and peaceful spa and treatment area. With fantastic architecture and blue-chip service on arrival and by the masseuses, the spa makes Panviman the perfect place to take care of yourself, rejuvenate and relax. Once you have drank the tea chosen on arrival, the masseuse take you to the special spa room decorated with floating flowers and pastel colours.

Bob de Jong’s 5 top-things to do while in Chang Mai? “Beside enjoying our extensive grounds and our award-winning Spa there are plenty of things to do Maerim and Chiang Mai: a visit to the Elephant Camp and Nursery in Maerim. Chiang Mai is a city of temples, visiting some of them is another “must”. Just driving around on a motor bike sampling local coffee (Chiang Mai has an lots of coffee shops). The Saturday and Sunday markets are very busy indeed but a joy to walk around looking at locally made handicrafts.”
