Nan Goldin x Supreme pairs the underground photographer and activist, with the cult streetwear brand. It will launch on Thursday 29th March.
“I’m looking forward to seeing teenagers skating on my images and wearing them. To my mind, people have become so conservative, especially the millennials – it’s like the 1960s never happened – so I like the idea of them being exposed to my real world. A lot of people feel like someone else but are only brave enough to dress up for Halloween. My friends were pioneers. They paved the way for LGBT communities of today.” – the artist said about the collaboration. Throughout her career, Nan Goldin has taken intensely intimate, transgressive and dark photographs of her family, friends, and lovers.
The skate, street brand dived into the archives of Goldin’s – featuring themes of queer identities, sexual vocabulary, broken feminity etc. – to design this fantastic collection.
“Nan Goldin’s work is real and raw – in the time, places and subject matter she shot. It comes from an era where the subjects she documented were taboo by society’s standards. To do this project with Nan Goldin is to celebrate the diversity her work represents and expose young people to it.” said Supreme.
As RuPaul, whose success is at the highest now with his show RuPaul DragRace recently stated on US TV: “Drag is a punk rock statement. It says to this masculine-dominated culture, ‘You know what? I’m not gonna fit in this box. I’m not gonna fit in that box. I’m gonna say, hoo-hoo-hoo! Boxes! Who cares about boxes?’”. Supreme understands this better than anyone else with this new capsule collection.
