BEUYS: new documentary by Andres Veiel
BEUYS is a new documentary directed by Andres Veiel and produced by Thomas Kufus exploring the life and legacy of artist Joseph Beuys. The film will premiere in NY at Film Forum on 17 January 2018.
Thirty years after his death, the enigmatic German Fluxus artist Joseph Beuys continues to fascinate the public and young artists. Filmmaker Andres Veiel has brought together never-before-seen archival footage, showing how Beuys’s teachings (at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf), installations (using felt and fat), ‘happenings’ (covering himself in honey and gold leaf in How to Explain Paintings to a Dead Hare or locking himself in a room with a coyote in I Like America and America Likes Me), and lectures (“money shouldn’t be a commodity”) redefined the contours of modern and contemporary art pushing the boundaries of performances, way before artists like Marina Abramović.
