Art is Alive catches up with the artist on the occasion of her solo-exhibition at Pikes, the legendary hotel of Ibiza. The hotel was originally created in the late 1970’s by Tony Pike. For the last few decades Pikes has been a playground for the music elite with regular guests including artists such as Grace Jones, Spandau Ballet, George Michael and Freddie Mercury who held his legendary 41st Birthday Party at the hotel in the infamous ‘Marrakesh Suite’ now called Freddies.
FREE WOMEN by Diana Gomez is a women-inspired and semi-autobiographical exhibition featuring life-size portraits and outdoor installations of Diana’s photographs in support of Teenage Cancer Trust. Taking over the grounds, swimming pool and terrace of the Pikes Hotel, FREE WOMEN remains on view until the end of September. The show ran alongside a series of events that included a Primal Scream’s concert in August.
Tell us about your current exhibition FREE Women: how did it come about and how did you approach it?
It is a body of work I have been thinking about and creating for a few years now. They are photographs from narratives that talk about my life, my love for freedom, self-expression and the beauty that surround me.
Best memory photographing Courtney Love?
I was in New York, she turned up really late, when she walked in it felt like a hoard of buffalos had just larrived. I had created a beautiful punk music set on my ipod which she adored. She was crying, she had just been dumped by her boyfriend. I tried to console her and made her feel alright. I shot her and I tried to make her feel better. She kind of liked me. I liked her and I photographed the reflection of her on a mirror crying.
