Venice Art Biennale: Anne Imhof wins the Golden Lion for “Faust”

Anne Imhof has won the Golden Lion for best national participation with “Faust” a dark, grunge and gothic five-hour performance and music, staged inside the raised-glass floor of the German pavilion. Barking dogs outside, troubling dancers inside composed a curious ballet of situations and experiences involving totalitarian visuals, leather, electric guitars and fire. Performed beneath the visitors and amongst them the piece is both oppressive and poetic.

“The mute howls bear witness to the ever-increasing pain of vanishing living beings and to the zombification of capitalist bodies. Dualistic conceptions and the frontier between the subject and the object of capitalism disintegrate…” the official literature on the pavilion detailed.
