CaixaForum in Madrid presents an exhibition dedicated to Latvian-born photographer Philippe Halsman. Philippe Halsman loved to tell the story of the famous meeting between Jean Cocteau and Sergei Diaghilev in which the young Frenchman asked the master what he had to do to work with him, to which the founder of the Russian Ballets replied: “Surprise me!” . Keeping this as a leitmotiv, Halsman went on to photograph the most amazing artists. Many Hollywood celebrities posed for him and his portraits remain iconic today, particularly those that were featured in Life magazine. This exhibition revisits his life, career and features some of his most famous photographs. Highlights include Halsman’s remarkable series with Salvador Dalí, exploring a friendship which lasted for more than thirty years and had a great influence on the work of the photographer throughout his career.
