Running until 21 September 2025, the Musée Picasso in Paris stages the first major exhibition in France dedicated to the influential Brazilian artist Anna Maria Maiolino.
Organised as part of the Brazil-France 2025 cultural season, the exhibition brings together approximately 100 works, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, films, and installations spanning several decades of her career.
Maiolino, who was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 2024 Venice Biennale, is widely recognised as a seminal figure in postwar Latin American art. Born in Italy and having lived in Venezuela before settling in Brazil in 1960, her practice is deeply informed by themes of displacement, migration, and linguistic fragmentation, experiences that resonate with broader narratives of exile and cultural hybridity.
Working across a diverse range of media, from minimalist clay sculptures and performative videos to politically charged drawings and text-based works, Maiolino’s art is rooted in the everyday, yet often explores existential questions around the body, language, and identity. Her Mediterranean heritage and shared exploration of materiality and form establish a subtle, though compelling, dialogue with Pablo Picasso, whose legacy remains central to the Musée Picasso’s mission.
This landmark exhibition not only highlights the international scope of Maiolino’s influence but also marks an important moment of cultural exchange between Brazil and France, underscoring her enduring relevance in contemporary art.
