Staged at The Parish Church of St Cuthbert in Edinburgh is Three Women, a meditative installation by American artist Bill Viola and his wife and close collaborator, Kira Perov.

In this meditative work, the mother and her daughters enact a transfiguration when they choose to pass through the threshold of water and briefly enter an illuminated realm.

By exploring such universal human experiences as birth and death, Viola’s moving images engage with ideas of spirituality, self-knowledge and consciousness. His work is imbued with Eastern and Western art traditions, as well as religious or spiritual ideas deriving from Zen Buddhism, Islamic Sufism and Christian mysticism.

This impressive work was previously shown at St Peter’s Cathedral in North Adelaide and at the Grand Palais, Paris and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. It is on view until 1st September 2018.
