Winter’s voyage at Versailles

Following cartes blanches by artists including Takashi Murakami, Giuseppe Penone, Lee Ufan, and Joana Vasconcelos among others, Versailles celebrates its 10th anniversary of contemporary art programme this year with a group exhibition in its flamboyant gardens.

Seventeen artworks by luminaries including John Giorno, Ugo Rondinone, and Rick Owens draw inspiration from Franz Schubert’s Winterreise score in the impressive outside spaces of Louis XIV’s Palace.

Highlights include Rondinone’s beautiful installation, a monumental winter sun, marrying the northern and southern sides of Versailles, reflecting the cyclical nature of the planet. Positioned behind Apollo’s chariot and comprised of interwoven bronze branches, the solar wheel further extends the artist’s romantic exploration of the fragility of existence.
