Josef Albers: Meditations will be presented from 9 April 2026 – 10 January 2027, at the sumptuous Villa Panza in Varese. The show will offer a rare and quietly powerful opportunity to revisit one of the twentieth century’s great masters of colour.
Set within the villa’s serene eighteenth-century rooms, the exhibition will bring together thirty paintings from Albers’s seminal Homage to the Square and Variant series, allowing his rigorous explorations of perception to unfold in dialogue with the historic interiors.
Curated by Nicholas Fox Weber, executive director of the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, the exhibition will focus on works that most fully express Albers’s lifelong investigation into perceptions, interactions and explorations of colours. As Weber notes, these paintings “realize Josef’s vision of color interaction to an extent that makes each of them ineffably sublime,” radiating an intensity that feels both precise and deeply moving.
Seen individually yet thoughtfully grouped, the paintings reveal Albers’s extraordinary ability to suggest depth and motion on a flat surface. Subtle shifts in hue and tone create optical vibrations that draw the viewer into a meditative state. Within the calm grandeur of Villa Panza, Albers’s works reward slow looking, inviting colour to be experienced as something both visual and emotional.
This will make for a perfect stop after this year’s Venice Art Biennale.
