Roe Etheridge at Gagosian Athens

Gagosian presents Rude in the Good Way, a new exhibition by Roe Ethridge opening in Athens on view until 7th March 2026, marking the artist’s return to the city with a body of work that moves fluidly between fashion, portraiture, still life and studio photography.

Long interested in hybridity, Ethridge once drew parallels between his practice and the layered symbolism of the Erechtheion on the Acropolis, a sensibility that re-emerges in the show. The exhibition unfolds through carefully staged juxtapositions in the gallery and a companion book published to coincide with the show.

Personal memory, desire and art history intersect throughout. Fashion images featuring Chanel sit alongside intimate portraits of writer Lulu Sylbert, Ethridge’s partner and collaborator, exploring sensuality without collapsing into imbalance or control. Elsewhere, layered exposures and heightened detail transform still-life subjects, apples, candles, melting biscuits, into psychologically charged images.

Two photographs revisiting painter John Currin’s studio further reflect Ethridge’s ongoing interest in the dialogue between photography and painting, creativity and intimacy. A book published by Loose Joints will be released on the occasion of the show, don’t miss it if you’re in Athens.
