The German artist Anne Imhof, one of the most influential contemporary artists of our time, presents Fun ist ein Stahlbad, her first solo exhibition in Portugal, at the Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Fundação de Serralves in Porto. The show will run until 19 April 2026.
Imhof rose to international prominence when she won the Golden Lion for Best National Participation at the 2017 Venice Biennale for her groundbreaking performance work Faust. Since then, she has staged some of her most remarkable shows at The Tanks at Tate Modern in London, cementing her reputation for immersive, challenging, and critically acclaimed installations.
The exhibition at Serralves, titled after a line from Dialectic of Enlightenment by Adorno and Horkheimer, investigates the tension between pleasure and social discipline. Visitors encounter site-specific installations, moving-image works, sculpture, and immersive environments that explore themes of vulnerability, endurance, and the social dynamics of modern life. A central highlight is a monumental steel “pool” sculpture in the Pátio do Ulmeiro, specially conceived for the museum and interacting dynamically with Álvaro Siza Vieira’s architecture.
Curated by Inês Grosso, Chief Curator at Serralves, and coordinated by Filipa Loureiro, the exhibition affirms Anne Imhof’s place as a key voice in contemporary art, offering audiences an intense, layered encounter with the body, affect, and the pressures of our era.
