Frida: The Making of an Icon at Tate Modern this summer

Did you need another reason to visit London this summer beyond the music festivals and the tennis championships? From 25 June 2026 to 3 January 2027, Tate Modern on London’s South Bank will host Frida: The Making of an Icon, a major exhibition tracing the extraordinary trajectory of Frida Kahlo from fiercely original artist to global cultural phenomenon. She transcended visual arts to become a cultural icon.

Featuring over 130 works, including her most celebrated paintings, alongside photographs, letters, and personal memorabilia, the show illuminates the many facets of Kahlo’s life: devoted wife, political activist, intellectual, and modernist trailblazer.

Organised in collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the exhibition places Kahlo’s work in dialogue with that of over 80 contemporaries and later artists she influenced. This expansive context highlights her enduring impact on art, activism, and culture across the 20th and 21st centuries, exploring how her image and legacy have been shaped, reinterpreted, and celebrated worldwide.

Visitors will also gain rare insight into the archival materials and personal objects that shaped Kahlo’s rise to iconic status. Located at Tate Modern, Bankside, London SE1 9TG, the exhibition offers a unique chance to experience both the vibrancy of her art and the breadth of her influence. Advance booking is strongly recommended for this landmark show, one of the most expected shows this year!
