At this year’s Art Basel Paris closing tonight, Pace Gallery presents Jeune fille aux macarons (Young Woman with Hair in Side Buns) (1918), a luminous late portrait by Amedeo Modigliani that exemplifies the artist’s mature style. The work, included in the forthcoming Amedeo Modigliani Catalogue Raisonné by Marc Restellini, marks the beginning of an ambitious multi-part collaboration between Pace, the Institut Restellini, and Yale University Press.
The collaboration celebrates the publication of Restellini’s definitive six-volume Amedeo Modigliani Catalogue Raisonné, to be released in March 2026 and distributed worldwide by Yale University Press. Decades in the making, this scholarly project combines scientific and stylistic research to reassess the artist’s work. Restellini’s research has authenticated around 100 previously unrecorded paintings and re-evaluated numerous others, setting a new benchmark for art historical methodology.
To inaugurate this partnership, Pace presents Jeune fille aux macarons at its Art Basel Paris booth. Painted in 1918, the portrait embodies Modigliani’s synthesis of influences—from the sculptural clarity of Constantin Brâncuși to the stylized grace of the Italian Old Masters.
X-ray radiography by Institut Restellini has uncovered an underlying drawing beneath the visible composition of Jeune fille aux macarons, revealing the deliberative precision that defined Modigliani’s process. The painting’s inclusion in Restellini’s catalogue underscores its significance within the artist’s oeuvre and its role in shaping a new understanding of his late period.
“After a journey of over 30 years, we are very pleased to finally present the Catalogue Raisonné of Modigliani’s paintings,” says Marc Restellini. “We are proud to have Yale University Press as our distributor and delighted to collaborate with Pace, whose expertise in catalogues raisonnés makes them the ideal partner.”
With this partnership, Pace continues its long-standing commitment to scholarship, having previously co-founded Artifex Press, the first digital catalogue raisonné platform. Jeune fille aux macarons thus serves as both a prelude and a symbol—bridging Modigliani’s timeless art with a new era of research, collaboration, and discovery.
