The Philadelphia Museum of Art will present ‘Dreamworld: Surrealism at 100’ from 8 November 2025 to 16 February 2026, the only US iteration of the touring centenary exhibition organised in partnership with the Centre Pompidou. This is one of the most anticipated exhibitions in the US.
In his 1924 Manifesto of Surrealism, André Breton called on people to embrace dreamlike imagination as a guide for living freely. The artists who rallied around this idea sought new expressive forms for exploring the human capacity for wonder.
‘Dreamworld’ will feature approximately 200 works by more than 60 artists associated with the international Surrealist movement, including highlights in the PMA’s own collection by Joan Miró, Salvador Dalí and Dorothea Tanning. Each of the touring museums were tasked with presenting a distinct story of Surrealism relevant to their own histories and collections.
At the PMA, the exhibition will provide a chronological installation arranged through six thematic sections, including one, unique to Philadelphia, that focuses on artists who fled from Europe to Mexico and the US during World War II.
The boundless creativity of Surrealism will invite visitors to explore a world where dreams, magic, and chance are explored. Featuring beloved works from Philadelphia’s collection alongside international loans from artists such as Frida Kahlo and Remedios Varo, this exhibition will be fabulous.
