Angelin Preljocaj celebrates 40 years of dance

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Preljocaj Ballet, a milestone for one of contemporary dance’s most visionary choreographers. Angelin Preljocaj, renowned for blending classical technique with modern sensibilities, has consistently pushed the boundaries of narrative, form, and visual spectacle since founding his company in 1985. His work has captivated audiences worldwide, merging the precision of ballet with the expressive freedom of contemporary movement.

To celebrate four decades of innovation, the company is hosting a series of events at Pavillon Noir in Aix-en-Provence, France, the iconic space that has served as both creative laboratory and performance venue. Central to the anniversary is the photographic exhibition 40 Years of Creation in Pictures, offering a rare, intimate glimpse into the company’s history.

Featuring images by Jean-Claude Carbonne, Didier Philispart, and Yang Wang, the exhibition traces the evolution of Preljocaj’s choreography, from early seminal works to recent productions, capturing both the physical intensity and poetic grace of his dancers.

The exhibition is complemented by a convivial space at Bar Le Richild within Pavillon Noir, where visitors can reflect on the artistry and legacy of Preljocaj’s work. Together with performances, talks, and archival screenings scheduled throughout the anniversary season, the exhibition offers a multifaceted celebration of a company that has continually redefined contemporary ballet.

40 Years of Creation in Pictures stands as both a testament and a tribute: a visual record of Angelin Preljocaj’s enduring impact on dance, and an invitation to witness his artistry.
