Sterling Ruby at MaMo by Ora Ïto

MaMo by Ora Ïto, the contemporary art space situated atop Le Corbusier’s Cité Radieuse in Marseille, features a major installation by Sterling Ruby until September 28, 2025. The exhibition, nearly a decade in preparation, unites two of Ruby’s most significant works: the monumental sculpture DOUBLE CANDLE (2018) and his largest spray-painting to date, WALL (2017).

By placing these landmark pieces within the context of one of the 20th century’s most radical architectural achievements, the exhibition sparks a powerful dialogue between Ruby’s contemporary explorations of form and Le Corbusier’s modernist vision. Described by The New York Times critic Roberta Smith as “one of the most interesting artists of this century,” Ruby has built a wide-ranging practice that interrogates material transformation, social structures, and the built environment.

For the Los Angeles–based artist, the presentation at MaMo offers a rare opportunity to engage with the cultural and symbolic legacy of La Cité Radieuse, a UNESCO World Heritage site, situating his work within a setting that embodies radical innovation and utopian ideals.

The encounter between Ruby’s vast, restless forms and Le Corbusier’s architectural masterpiece highlights both artists’ shared interest in scale, structure, and the human condition.
