Manifesta, the European Nomadic Biennial, will take place in the historic city of Coimbra, Portugal, in 2028.
The announcement of Manifesta 17 Coimbra was recently made by Margarida Balseiro Lopes, Portugal’s Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sports, in collaboration with the City of Coimbra, the University of Coimbra, the Portuguese Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, and the Ministry of Tourism.
This special edition will be developed in close partnership with Anozero – Coimbra’s own biennial, founded by the Círculo de Artes Plásticas de Coimbra (CAPC), together with the Municipality of Coimbra and the University of Coimbra.
Set against the remarkable backdrop of the University of Coimbra – a 13th-century institution and UNESCO World Heritage Site – the city offers a setting steeped in academic heritage, medieval history, and architectural splendor. Coimbra has also long been a hub for the arts, with CAPC, Portugal’s oldest institution devoted to contemporary art, playing a vital role in shaping the cultural landscape.
Marking the first time Manifesta will be held in Portugal, this edition represents a significant milestone for the biennial. A formal signing ceremony with all partners will take place in Coimbra in September 2025, officially inaugurating this new chapter of collaborative artistic exploration.
