Chappell Roan signed the song of the summer with the August release of her highly anticipated single, “The Subway”, via Amusement / Island Records. A gut-wrenching ballad co-written and produced with Daniel Nigro, the song explores the quiet heartbreak of missed connections and lingering pain, showcasing Roan’s vulnerable lyricism and powerful vocal performance.
Fans had been eagerly awaiting the release since she began performing it live last summer, and anticipation was fueled by viral hints around New York.
Accompanying the release is Roan’s most ambitious official video to date, filmed on location in Manhattan. Directed by Amber Grace Johnson (known for her work with Jorja Smith, FKA Twigs, and Lolo Zouaï), “The Subway” is a high-camp love letter to New York City and the one that got away, captured entirely on 35mm film. In the video, Roan sheds her signature red hair, revealing the vulnerable, lovelorn singer navigating iconic New York moments, doing anything but blending in and literally being dragged along. On the subway, she encounters ghosts of her past and visions of her future self, while above ground, she contends with garbage and rats, yet continues her quest for that once-special feeling.
Roan shares, “The cliche of “the girl that got away” barely scratches the surface for me with this song. I wrote it as I was stumbling around New York with a broken heart and I kept envisioning us on every street, fire escape, coffee shop, park and yes… the subway.”
Chappell recently headlined Primavera in Barcelona and all major European Festivals, which were all sold-out!
