HAPPYEND, the new feature by Neo Sora (Ryuichi Sakamoto: Opus) will open in UK cinemas on 19 September 2025.
Set in a near-future Tokyo overshadowed by the constant threat of a devastating earthquake, the story follows two rebellious, music-loving best friends, Yuta and Kou, portrayed by newcomers Hayato Kurihara and Yukito Hidaka, on the brink of graduating high school. One night, a prank on their Principal spirals unexpectedly, leading to the installation of a school-wide surveillance system.
As political tensions rise nationally, Kou grows increasingly disillusioned while Yuta remains seemingly oblivious. Kou finds inspiration in a passionate student activist, awakening his political awareness and driving a wedge between the two friends. For the first time, their lifelong bond is tested by differences they can no longer ignore.
Featuring an original score by Lia Ouyang Rusli, with additional music by Sea Cucumber and a live performance from DJ ¥ØU$UK€ ¥UK1MAT$U (Yousuke Yukimatsu), HAPPYEND is a powerful meditation on friendship, connection, and the search for meaning in a time of profound social change.
