When in Hamburg: stay at Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten Hotel, the epitome of elegance and timeless charm

Hamburg stands out as Germany’s most sophisticated city, celebrated for its world-class art museums, elegant boutiques, glamorous cafés, and an abundance of charming spots for brunch.

It’s also the city of two giants of fashion: Jil Sander, who built her iconic brand in the city, and Karl Lagerfeld who now has a promenade named after him. Though Lagerfeld spent much of his career in Paris and became a symbol of French and Italian fashion through his work at Chanel and Fendi, Hamburg always held a special place in his heart. That connection was powerfully expressed in the 2017 Chanel Métiers d’Art show, which he staged at the newly opened Elbphilharmonie, one of the city’s most striking architectural landmarks. The collection drew directly from Hamburg’s maritime heritage, featuring sailor caps, tailored naval coats, and seafaring motifs, a heartfelt tribute and stylish homecoming to the city where it all began.

Long before global fame, The Beatles also cut their teeth in the gritty clubs of Hamburg too, a city that played a crucial role in shaping their sound and identity. Between 1960 and 1962, the young band performed marathon sets at venues like the Indra Club, Kaiserkeller, and later the Star-Club, often playing for hours each night to demanding and eclectic crowds. These intense, formative gigs in the red-light district of St. Pauli helped transform the Beatles from teenage hopefuls into a tight, electrifying live act. As John Lennon later famously said, “I might have been born in Liverpool – but I grew up in Hamburg.”

Hamburg is a truly fascinating city that rewards those who take the time to explore it fully. With its rich cultural history, striking architecture, and vibrant neighbourhoods, it offers far more than a quick visit can reveal. There’s a lot to see in Hamburg!

Where would you want to stay for a long weekend, a business trip or a romantic honey moon? Look no further, the mythical Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten is the absolute best.

Since 1897, Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten stands for excellent service, timeless elegance, and “Hanseatic” (comprising Hamburg, Lübeck, or Bremen) hospitality. Founded by hotelier Friedrich Haerlin as a small hotel, it quickly became one of Hamburg’s most prestigious establishments. With his keen sense of quality and an unwavering commitment to service, Haerlin laid the foundation for a tradition that continues to this day. The hotel emerged from World War II untouched. The bar under its vaults, was hidden from the British Army and the best bottles remained there. The gorgeous porcelain sculptures of little angels, now displayed in its 2 Michelin starred  restaurant (boasting an impressive Swarovski installation), inspired the hotel’s name, “Four Seasons.” These figures were once concealed in the lake directly across from the hotel. The hotel’s history is captivating too, making it an institution.

Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten remains the only hotel by the Inner Alster Lake that has preserved its character. Over the decades, it has been carefully modernised while maintaining its original charm. Its location indeed, is one of its many assets. Its exceptional position opposite the lake, puts guests just a short walk from the city’s top shopping districts, cultural sites, and the historic Jungfernstieg promenade. The Kunsthalle and the Bucerius Kunst Forum are some of the spectacular museums in close distance.

Today, Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten masterfully blends tradition with modern luxury, creating a unique atmosphere where guests feel at home from the very first moment. It’s simply stunning.

The hotel was founded in 1897 as a small establishment with just 11 rooms. Today it comprises a total of 156 rooms and suites. These accommodations are individually designed, blending historic charm with modern luxury. The iconic Bel Etage provide stunning terraced views of the Inner Alster Lake.

Ingo C. Peters, Managing Director talks to Art is Alive: “We collaborate with various partners who bring individuality to every detail. Partnering with exceptional artists from around the world allows us to seamlessly integrate their creativity into our interior design. This fusion of heritage and contemporary artistry creates a refined balance between tradition and modernity – an essential element that defines Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten.”

Upon arrival, the hotel features a luxurious perfume boutique by the renowned fragrance house Krigler. Established in 1908, Krigler’s boutique offers a curated selection of their exclusive fragrances, luxury scented candles, and bespoke perfume services. Upon entering, guests are welcomed with arrangements made of red roses, a bottle of champagne, and a bowl of M&Ms, Ralph Lauren’s favorite chocolate, adding a personal touch to the luxurious experience. It’s magnificent and so fun!

On the many artworks and pieces of furniture on display, Ingo C. Peters adds: “Our art collection is a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, where historical elements are reimagined and complemented by contemporary art. Each of our rooms features carefully curated details that reflect the heritage and character of our property. Our aspiration is to preserve traditional values while transforming them into a modern interpretation, allowing our guests to experience a unique connection between the past and the present.”

The hotel offers several exclusive event spaces too, including ballrooms and meeting rooms, suitable for various occasions from business meetings to weddings. This is very convenient for bigger events.

So what’s the biggest challenges as Director? “One of the greatest challenges is attracting and retaining talented individuals who share our passion for hospitality and service excellence. Creating truly memorable experiences for our guests, especially those with unique or highly personalised requests, requires exceptional attention to detail, organization and flexibility. Our goal is always to anticipate their needs and exceed expectations, ensuring each stay feels effortless and unforgettable.”

As all hotels are adapting to climate change, Ingo C. Peters continues: “Sustainability is a key priority for us, and we continuously invest in innovative technologies to reduce our environmental footprint. As a proud recipient of the Green Sign Certificate, we are committed to operating in an eco-friendly manner while ensuring the highest level of comfort for our guests. One of our key initiatives is minimising plastic waste by transitioning entirely to glass bottles in all areas of the hotel. Additionally, we focus on energy and water efficiency throughout the hotel, integrating sustainable practices without compromising the luxury experience. Furthermore, restoring and refurbishing our furniture play a vital role in our sustainability efforts, helping us minimise waste. Our guests can enjoy their stay knowing that they are part of a responsible and environmentally conscious hospitality approach.”

“Hamburg offers many incredible sights, but one of our top recommendations is the Elbphilharmonie. This world-renowned concert hall offers an exceptional range of musical performances and features a breathtaking viewing platform. From there, visitors can enjoy a stunning panoramic view over the city and harbour – a place where Hamburg’s maritime soul truly comes to life.”

The city also serves as a gateway to other captivating destinations, such as the UNESCO-listed town of Lübeck, just a short train ride away, known for its medieval charm and marzipan-filled history. Whether you’re wandering along the Elbe, diving into its dynamic arts scene, or venturing out to nearby gems, Hamburg invites you to slow down and discover its many layers.

Where’s a hidden gem in Hamburg? “It’s got to be the “Treppenviertel” – the staircase quarter in Blankenese. With its winding alleys, white houses, and breathtaking views of the River Elbe, it feels like a Mediterranean escape. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, it offers a peaceful and picturesque setting. A walk from Blankenese down to the Elbe beach takes you through charming gardens and cosy café – an ideal way to experience a more quiet, yet equally enchanting side of Hamburg.”

After a long day of sight seeing, guests can indeed unwind in the hotel’s serene spa and wellness areas, a peaceful sanctuary within the lively city or exercise at the gym to stay in shape after the glorious food options in the many top restaurants.

Last but not lost least, the hotel belongs to Fairmont which is always a guarantee for excellent quality. Fairmont San Francisco opened its doors on Nob Hill in 1907, quickly establishing itself as the premier setting for elegant balls, presidential visits, and political events. This iconic opening marked the beginning of the Fairmont Hotels & Resorts legacy. Over the years, the Fairmont hotels have played a prominent role in historic moments, including Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten. The United Nations Charter was signed in the Garden Room of Fairmont San Francisco, and in 1943, Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt convened at Fairmont Le Château Frontenac to plan the Normandy D-Day. From Hollywood icons to music legends and royalty, the Fairmont’s luxury hotels have welcomed the world’s most celebrated guests.
