Anne Imhof, Sex by Skira

Skira publishes the most significant book on Anne Imhof’s oeuvre. Exploring the full spectrum of media including painting, sculpture, performance, drawing, architectural elements, and music, the art of Anne Imhof oscillates between tension, physicality, beauty, and digital communication.

The volume, published on the occasion of the exhibition and performance SEX, initiated at Tate Modern, in London, 2019-2021, documents, through photographs, drawings, scores and unpublished texts, the work of this artist, considered one of the most innovative voices of her generation. It features the texts, essays and analytical thoughts of leading figures Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, Marcella Beccaria, Hendrik Folkerts, and Catherine Wood. The publication is available in both English and Italian editions, featuring 167 colour illustrations and 8 images. It is printed in a large format, measuring 25 × 28 cm.

“DOOM: House of Hope,” presented in New York in March 2025, converted a sprawling 55,000-square-foot space into a dystopian yet hopeful atmosphere. Conceived as an ‘oeuvre d’art totale’, the performance showcased a diverse group of 60 performers, including dancers, musicians, and artists. It featured elements like a gymnasium floor, a towering red doomsday clock displayed on a jumbotron, and props such as Cadillac Escalades, blending themes of community, anxiety, and resilience.

Narcissism, alienation through social media, grunge, and emotional torment, typical of our time, are essential components of her durational performances also inspired by the imagery of underground musical culture, where performers mingle with the audience.

This week, her gallery, Sprüth Magers participates in TEFAF New York with a solo presentation dedicated to Imhof’s new works. Following DOOM: House of Hope, at the Park Avenue Armory just prior to TEFAF, the exhibition highlights Imhof’s exploration of a new medium: bronze. First introduced in her solo show at Kunsthaus Bregenz in 2024, her metallic reliefs use this ancient material to further her investigation into the movements and nuances of the human body.
