Modern Films release E.1027 – EILEEN GRAY AND THE HOUSE BY THE SEA which will launch in UK and Irish cinemas on 16 May 2025, following its World Premiere at CPH:DOX 2024 and with an Irish Premiere at the Dublin International Film Festival 2025 and further festival screenings at DOK.Fest München 2024.
The film E.1027 – EILEEN GRAY AND THE HOUSE BY THE SEA is a cinematic journey into the spirit and life of the pioneering female Irish architect Eileen Gray (1878-1976). The film brings to life the dramatic story of one of the world’s most influential designers of the modern era and her breathtaking home, E.1027 – a modernist villa built in the 1920s – which became the obsession of fellow 20th century icon of architecture, Le Corbusier, often jealous of her talent. Le Corbusier is known for ‘defacing’ the white walls of the house with his own murals, utterly upsetting Gray.
E.1027 – Eileen Gray and the House by the Sea is a hybrid film shot on location at E.1027 in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin on the French Riviera, as well as in Basel, Vézelay, and Paris. The film delves into the strength of female artistic vision and the historical attempts by men to suppress or control it.
Eileen Gray, both architect and designer, conceived not only the architecture of E.1027 but also its interiors and furnishings, an exceptional achievement that distinguishes the house from other modernist private dwellings. The film showcases the life and art of Gray and the attempts to be taken as seriously as her male counterparts. It’s a poignant story and a beautiful film.
