Oscar Murillo in Mexico

This exhibition, titled Espirítus en el Pantano (Spirits in the Swamp) presented at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey, Mexico, marks the first museum presentation in Mexico of Oscar Murillo’s work and it’s on view until 10th August 2025.

Through video, installations, and an interactive painting, Murillo transforms the museum spaces into social arenas. His work highlights the power of material presence and the significance of collectivity and shared culture. The centerpiece of the show, Espirítus en el Pantano (2024–25), features large expanses of canvas that trace the boundaries of each room.

Murillo transforms the galleries into dynamic spaces that are more than just neutral containers—they become stages for performativity. The canvases extend across the galleries, accumulating lines and words over time, while long sections of dark fabric, once part of the artist’s studio floor, hang like remnants of a sedimentation process.

A monumental structure, plastic chairs, and stones molded from corn evoke informal spaces of sociability, subverting the typical conventions of exhibition architecture. These elements serve as tools to cross-reference and place in tension complex cultural identities.

On Wednesdays and Sundays, when admission is free, visitors are invited to leave their own messages and drawings on the canvas, creating a “swamp” of layered marks.
