David Hockney: Living in Colour

Spanning painting, photography, printmaking, and digital media, David Hockney’s work remains relevant and innovative across decades. He’s probably the most significant living artist. He continues to push artistic boundaries, such as his recent immersive digital landscapes and large-scale works inspired by the changing seasons.

Hockney has consistently embraced new technologies in his work, from Polaroid photo collages in the 1980s to digital drawings on iPads and iPhones. His ability to blend traditional techniques with modern tools has kept his work at the cutting edge of contemporary art. “In art, new ways of seeing mean new ways of feeling; you can’t divorce the two, as, we are now aware, you cannot have time without space and space without time.” David Hockney once said.

This incredible force is explored in a remarkable exhibition featured at Halcyon Gallery, in New Bond Street in London until 16 February 2025. Only one week to enjoy this great show displayed across the gallery. The exhibition encompasses Hockney’s artistic journey from etchings created during his art school years in the early 1960s to his digital landscapes of the 2010s.

Highlights include his affinities with the work of Spanish master Pablo Picasso. At the heart of the exhibition is a large-scale painting by Picasso, presented alongside drawings of Hockney’s self-portraits engaging with the artist. A focus on Hockney’s iconic swimming pool is also presented by the entrance and a series of lithographs and important books are also on display revealing Hockney’s ability to navigate through all media.
