Helen Frankenthaler at Palazzo Strozzi, Florence

This survey exhibition, whose title translates to Painting without Rules, examines Helen Frankenthaler’s artistic affinities, influences, and friendships by interweaving paintings created between 1953 and 2002 with a selection of works by some of her contemporaries, including Anthony Caro, Morris Louis, Robert Motherwell, Kenneth Noland, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko among others.

Curated by Douglas Dreishpoon, director of the Helen Frankenthaler catalogue raisonné project, the show features loans from the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation, museums, and private collections, and includes works by her peers that were part of the artist’s personal collection.

It is at Palazzo Strozzi, in Florence and on view from 27 September to 26 January 2025.
