In the lead up to the intervention as she called it, artist Marina Abramović said to Vogue UK: “I know that I’m doing something that is important, and I love risk. I’m also ready to fail.” She did it, she made audiences at the most important festival on earth keep quiet for ten minutes and reflect on peace and the current state of the world.
Only five minutes were initially allotted to Abramović onstage, but after her intervention, PJ Harvey gave up a song from her setlist to give the contemporary artist more time on the Pyramid stage and more flexibility to carry on. As a result, Abramovic’s allotted time onstage increased to about ten.
Abramović ‘s presentation was among this year’s festival’s highlights (alongside Tilda Swinton introducing Orbital’s set), and for the occasion she wore an outfit created by former Burberry and Givenchy creative director Riccardo Tisci in the symbolic shape of the peace symbol.
