Beryl Cook / Tom of Finland is a significant new exhibition that puts together the work of these two cultural icons for the first time. The stunning and sensual show runs until 25th August and is a must-see.
Carnal desires are investigated at Studio Voltaire in pairings that highlight the humorous and political nature of their pieces. By combining their works, which include never-before-seen historical materials, this two-person presentation offers a shift in perspectives and makes connections between concepts related to gender, taste, and sexuality. It is apparently the most visited show of Studio Voltaire since its existence, Director Joe Scotland writes.
Both artists hyperrealise the body in pictures that, at their core, glorify pleasure and reject shame in a unique and cogent way. The exhibition also takes into account the methods of distribution that the artists used throughout their careers. To put her art in the homes of thousands of lovers, Cook’s approach was extensively replicated in postcards, calendars, and prints. Tom of Finland first disseminated his work through proto-porn ‘fitness’ publications and a clandestine network of friends and followers. The vitrines in the show demonstrate this. They frequently operated outside of gallery and museum structures, interacting directly with their audiences to build devoted and long-lasting superfans that in turn influenced popular culture more broadly.
