The Basquiat Estate partners with sock producer Jimmy Lion to offer amazing designs in recycled packaging. The company’s noble ethos is to provide unique, high-quality socks at an affordable price.
Jimmy Lion drew inspiration for its most recent collection from the iconic artist of the 1980s, Jean-Michel Basquiat, who passed away in 1988 at the age of 27, and is regarded as one of the most significant artists of the 20th century. The streetwear and urban art enthusiasts’ range is now available in the brand’s stores and online.
Graffiti under the moniker “SAMO” was how Jean-Michel Basquiat originally gained notoriety in New York City. Before his painting career took off, he made a living by selling postcards and sweatshirts with his artwork on them on the streets. In the middle of the 1980s, he and Andy Warhol worked together, producing a show of their combined work. “I cross out words so you will see them more….” – Jean-Michel Basquiat said.
He was a frequent at the Mudd Club, Club 57, and CBGB, haunted by a mix of musicians, artists (including Madonna), and filmmakers. Early in the 1980s, Basquiat made his breakthrough by creating a distinctive language that included xeroxed collage, human heads with open mouths appearing to be speaking, repeated motifs, and a range of marks. His use of acrylic, oil stick, and graphite to produce vibrant colour patches in his works captured the energy of New York’s underground culture.
Using the greatest manufacturers in Europe to produce these wonderful socks, Jimmy Lion uses the best materials, such as 100% organic cotton and premium-quality combed cotton. This new Basquiat estate collection is fabulous.
The label designed six alternative designs, three of which are ‘casual’ and three of which are ‘athletic’, drawing inspiration from some of Basquiat’s best works of art. Some of his greatest pieces, including Batman, Crown, a three-pointed crown that served as Basquiat’s trademark, Pez Dispenser, a dinosaur wearing a crown, Six Fifty, a collage with lightning bolts, words, and faces on a pink background, and Sugar Ray Robinson, a famous boxer wearing the iconic crown, are featured on the socks.
Jimmy Lion offers products distributed through e-commerce to over 50 countries globally. Established in 2014 by Spanish entrepreneurs Felipe Cortina and Álvaro Gomis, the digitally native brand debuted its first location on Madrid’s Calle Fuencarral in 2018. Two additional retail locations have since opened in Madrid and Barcelona.
Some of the materials used are:
1. ICEA-TX 396 Certified Organic Cotton: Increasing the use of certified organic cotton in the designs.
2. ECONYL® Regenerated Nylon: Introducing the use of regenerated nylon made from waste found in oceans to produce performance-quality tech socks.
3. Using packaging made from certified FSC recycled materials – since day one.
With its wonderful products and collaborations with artists’ estates, Jimmy Lion continues to lead socks-wear around the world. The Basquiat range is a must-have!
