Across the years, The Rubells have developed a passion for art, and since making their first purchase in 1965, they have built one of the most comprehensive and prestigious collections of contemporary art in the world. It currently includes 7,400 pieces by more than 1,000 artists, and it is continually expanding. The variety and geographic places of the artists featured in the collection further set it apart.
Viewers are regularly invited to new hangs of the Rubell Museum’s Collection Highlights, which include important paintings, sculptures, and installations included in the collection. It’s a delight for new joiners to the contemporary art world and experts alike.
The release of the extensive catalogue Collection Highlights and Artist Writings, a 288-page hardcover book examining the Rubell Family’s decades-long history of visiting, supporting leading artists and constructing a globally recognised collection of contemporary art, further explains these generous efforts to bring art to wider audiences.
The most recent show features fantastic artists including Sonia Boyce, Rashid Johnson, Mickalene Thomas, Glenn Ligon, Yoshitomo Nara and Marlene Dumas among many other important artists.
Doron Langberg’s room is absolutely beautiful with large-scale erotic and poetic works. The Rubell Museum is always a highlight of Art Basel Miami Beach hosted in December of each year.
The Rubell Museum’s acclaimed artist-in-residence program was established in 2011 as a continuation of the Museum’s mission to support emerging artists, spotlight a diverse mix of contemporary voices, and encourage connections withe public. The artist-in-residence program is a natural outgrowth of the Rubells’ multi-generational family passion for discovering, engaging, and supporting many of today’s most compelling artists, and participants have included artists that the Rubells have engaged with through ongoing relationship building and studio visits. Oscar Murillo, Kennedy Yanko, and Sterling Ruby are some of the artists who were selected to stay in residence with large-scale exhibitions that followed their stay.
Last but not least in this wonderful hub for artists: a special mention of Leku, the Basque restaurant next door to the collection and shop, with the most amazing garden. The gastronomy, wines and settings are truly magical at Leku (a reference to Basque artist represented by Hauser&Wirth Chillida-Leku for sure).
