Thomas Dane Gallery will present an exhibition by Marisa Merz, the second by the artist with the gallery and the first in its Naples location from 23rd January to 23rd March. Marisa Merz, the sole female member of the radical Arte Povera movement of the 1960s, is a unique figure in the history of modern art.
Many of Merz’s brilliant sculptures, paintings, and installations were created using common household objects and conventional craft methods, in contrast to her male predecessors who created art from the remnants of Italy’s industrial era. Her inherent ability with materials has led her to create odd and delicate items out of metal, fabric, copper wire, and clay.
Merz participated in the Venice Biennale five times and in her fifth showing, in 2013, received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. In 2017, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and Hammer Museum in Los Angeles co-organised a retrospective of Merz’s oeuvre, the artist’s first major retrospective in the United States.
