Around six years ago, Daphne Stephenson began painting wildlife in her distinctive outsider-art style, motivated by the suffering of creatures in the jungle as a result of poaching, deforestation, and climate change. “Naive artists make an appearance when art becomes too precious or too clever. Someone with a natural gift, untrained, comes along and overturns everybody’s preconceived notions, and makes us rethink and return to a pre-renaissance naturalism” Alan Bowness, former director of Tate said.
Through her vast travels around the world and personal life, Daphne Stephenson is inspired by the beauty of nature, wildlife, and the fundamental urge to move freely and be in nature. She works from her Wimbledon studio in London.
The artist launched her new, limited edition, silk scarves and shawls of her paintings in October 2019. Her greatest work is inspired by tropical jungles with lush flora, exotic animals, and birds, even though she also paints scenes from Britain and Europe.
For her entire life, Daphne Stephenson has been an artist. Her paintings, which are entirely self-taught, are vibrant, joyful, and exuberant. She frequently paints scenes of lush flora, tropical islands, birds, flowers, the sun, and the water. Her kaftan, kimono, dressing gown, pantaloons, silk scarves, tote bag, cushion and notebook will make perfect festive-season gifts.
