Domaine du Muy Sculpture Park

There’s a hidden sculpture park in the South of France. Domaine du Muy features an incredible collection of artworks disseminated across a large park of olive and pine trees. Artworks by major artists such as Subodh Gupta, Takis, Tomás Saraceno, Dennis Oppenheim, Sol LeWitt or Oscar Tuazon harmoniously sit in the lush Mediterranean landscape.

For nearly 30 years, Jean-Gabriel Mitterrand has showcased sculpture in his gallery in Paris, just as he has in numerous exhibitions of monumental works in public and private spaces throughout the world. In 2014, Mitterrand and his son Edward dreamed of creating an outdoor private venue dedicated to showcasing spectacular sculpture in the South of France. Domaine du Muy is a private space, yet welcomes art aficionados by appointment.

The park lives and evolves through the regular acquisition and installation of new works as an evolving environment. Today, it comprises forty artworks by contemporary artists from different geographies and generations. Resonating with the amazing outdoor presentation of large scale work, is a house renovated by French architect and designer India Mahdavi (who also lives in Arles). The façade’s in a silver colour, like the leaves of an olive tree, glistens in the midday sun and reflects the colours of the building’s environment. Through the renovation, the architect also added two terraces connected by a moucharaby. The house now sits on top of an exhibition space that is completely opened up to the Park – a proper gallery space. Furniture are also by Mahdavi and the interiors are stunning.

The Domaine du Muy is nestled between the Maures and Esterel Massifs. The Esterel’s Mediterranean forest of cork oaks and pines stretches out over several hundred hectares. Ranking among the most impressive art parks of the South of France, Domaine du Muy is an absolute must-see. Sun cream and hats will be needed.
