Running until September 24 at Le BAL, experimental exhibition space in Paris, La Part des Choses is an exhibition featuring the work of the Belgian photographer Harry Gruyaert through a wide selection of vintage Cibachrome prints. This remarkable exhibition explores the work of this leading figure of contemporary photography and Magnum icon.
Gruyaert is best known for his innovative use of color throughout the 1970s and 80s, breaking away from the prevailing black-and-white tradition of the time. His work has had a significant impact on the field of color photography, elevating it to an art form and inspiring countless photographers worldwide. Throughout his career, Gruyaert’s photographs have explored diverse themes and subjects, encompassing landscapes, urban environments, and street scenes. His ability to find beauty in the every day, coupled with a remarkable talent for spotting harmonious color compositions, has set him apart as a true master of his craft.
lnvented by Bela Gaspar, a Hungarian chemist, in 1933 and first trademarked in 1963, cibachrome is used to obtain a print from a slide (a positive to positive process) by destroying the dyes incorporated in the exposed and developed paper1s emulsion. These rare prints have been brought together exceptionally at the BAL thanks to loans from several collectors and from Gallery FIFTY ONE in Antwerp.
