For travellers in the South of France this August, the beautiful Château La Coste presents “Voyages avec Warhol,” a remarkable exhibition featuring rare photographic works by pop art icon Andy Warhol and spanning multiple themes from the artist’s interest. Curated from the James R. Hedges, IV Collection, the show includes over 40 works spotlighting Warhol’s interest in photography throughout his great career.
Warhol’s lifelong interest in photography stemmed from his childhood when he had a dark room in the basement of his parents’ home. As an adult, the artist not only used the camera to document his social life and travels, but also relied on it as a tool to create nearly all his works in other mediums, such as paintings and prints.
Highlights in the show, which explores Warhol’s fascination with celebrity, NYC and fame, also include queerness and sexuality, most evident in the making of his 1977 series ‘Sex Parts and Torsos’, a selection of which are featured in the exhibition.
One of the more intimate facets of the artist’s creativity is the figurative series depicting close-ups of male models in either classical (“Torsos”) or erotic poses (“Sex parts”). These became significant materials for prints and paintings of the later in the artist’s career.
The beautiful room dedicated to this momentous exhibition will be discovered in addition to the rest of the programme at Château La Coste and fantastic art park. This is a must-see this summer.
