QUEERCIRCLE showcases Zinzi Minott

On Windrush Day 2023 on 22nd June, which marks the 75th anniversary of the Empire Windrush docking in the UK, QUEERCIRCLE will launch a new exhibition by British artist Zinzi Minott. The exhibition will include the sixth iteration of Minott’s durational film series Fi-Dem (‘For Them’ in Patois), made annually on the anniversary of the Empire Windrush docking, and first created in response to the Windrush Scandal of 2018. Each film begins with a soundtrack of Lovers rock and bass-heavy Dub merged with collected visuals from sources including Windrush generation arrival footage, NHS Windrush nurses’ archives –notable as this year the NHS also celebrates its 75th anniversary – and footage from Notting Hill carnival and the 1985 riots across England, combined with Minott’s own family videos.

The new film will be accompanied by a series of five large-scale digital prints, some of which are stills taken directly from past iterations of Fi-Dem. The exhibition will also include Bloodsound (2022), a large-scale, sculptural and aural installation in the form of a Jamaican Sound System. For some, the music will be a relatable and comforting cultural reference, but glitches in the sound score will intentionally jar and cause discomfort, reminding audiences of the experience of racism and encouraging visitors to consider everyday Black British experience.
