21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is a wonderful exhibition space, perfectly designed by legendary Japanese architect Tadao Ando. It is located in Tokyo and currently features “The Original”, an exhibition looking at around 150 must-have objects designed by Japanese and international designers. Think sofas, scissors, bikes, lego, and tableware among many other references. The exhibition emphasises the importance of the home too.
“From the beginning of human civilization to the present, the home has been the primary place where daily life is conducted. Inside the home are many things that support our daily lives and are useful for living, all of which are closely connected to human beings. These “things” reflect the state of society in each era. What is interesting, however, is the fact that objects designed decades or even more than a century ago are often still being manufactured and used today. This is especially true for furniture and lighting fixtures.” The great wall text reads, in the recreation of a harmonious and original bedroom.
The exhibition is curated by Takahiro Tsuchida, a design expert, writer and exhibition curator. He’s also part-time Lecturer at Tokyo University of the Arts and at Kuwasawa Design School. In preparation for the exhibition, he said: “The notion of originality can be interpreted in various ways. Every design has it to some degree. But the products selected here are those which we feel show a capacity to be The Original among the plethora of existing products. Each exhibit is presented as a question to the viewer, not as an answer.”
Highlights in the show include the vibrant red Roly Poly chair, by Faye Toogood from 2018, which features on the exhibition cover, Mario Bellini’s round and elegant sofa, from 1972, and edited by B&B Italia, Spencer Silver’s revolutionary Post-It invented in 1980, Naoto Fukasawa’s “Tako Armchair” which is both functional and beautiful (2020), or Bengt Thornefors and Nina Norgren’s Metallic Nude Pillow Case from 2016. Many other iconic objects make visitors understand how useful to daily life these are. All these significant objects make for more sophisticated environments.
“To investigate designs surrounding us closely is to realise how the finest sparks of creation come at the intersection of individual and social vision. This exhibition brings light to these works in the hope of broadening thought and action, and to support the creation of future design.” The Issey Miyake Foundation, supporter of the show, wrote in the exhibition foreword. This fantastic show is running until 25th June. “I want visitors to feel how wonderful The Original can be. I want people to share my excitement.” Supervisor of the exhibiton, Naoto Fukasawa said.
21_21 DESIGN SIGHT itself holds an amazing boutique. It features a rare print by Tadao Ando, useful books and a slick range of clothes including jackets and shirts with images of Ando’s landmark concrete. The interior terrace is also a stunning space to visit.
