Reinventing eyewear, and particularly sunglasses, is extremely difficult in a day and age where almost everything has been designed. However, one brand that stands out is For Art’s Sake which offers excellent quality and original designs.
Inspired by artists, For Art’s Sake was founded in 2016 following a trip to Greece where founder Xiwen Zhang couldn’t find what she was looking for, with her partner, she decided to reach quality and affordability through beautiful glasses. “I wanted to create sunglasses that were different to anything I’d seen. I design each pair like it’s a little work of art. I started approaching each design as a piece of art.” Xiwen said about her creative and business approach. She studied art history and London’s Royal Academy is one of her favourite museums in London.
Today, For Art’s Sake is one of the most promising eyewear brands that has emerged from London’s fashion scene. The blue velvet package of each sunglasses, became the landmark of this new exciting house. Today, the brand has expanded into eyewear accessories, rings, earrings and bag chains among other luxury products.
FAS’ commitment to charities is also significant since with every purchase, FAS donates a pair of glasses to someone in need through Restoring Vision and plant a tree with Trees for the Future.
Looking for inspiration, FAS turned to artists’ creativity to create some of the most stunning collections. The latest incarnation is a fantastic series inspired by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.
Under three themes, Frida’s Brush, Frida’s Mask and Frida’s Portrait the collection takes the starting point from Kahlo’s vibrant palette, the artist’s virtuosity and singularity. Vibrant blue, green, brown and mauve are all imbued in stunning sunglasses displaying various shapes and styles. “We are inspired by the artist’s freedom to express & to, in Frida Kahlo words, “paint our own reality. Few artists stand as great in their resilience and authenticity as Kahlo. A vivid, and sensual life, she remains as relevant as ever for women today. Unique, independent and inspiring, Frida Kahlo, forever!” Xiwen Zhang said about the design and inspiration of this unique collection.
FAS can now be shopped in London and online thanks to a very charming boutique in Covent Garden sporting the brand’s colours and style, and can be found in the world’s most exclusive retailers, from Net-A-Porter to Harvey Nichols, Saks 5th Avenue among others.
Creative Director Xiwen Zhang was also selected to appear on Forbes’ 30 Under 30 List for 2019, cementing For Art’s Sake’s position as a significant brand. Talk about a success story!
