Lisbon, the capital of Portugal is Europe’s hottest spot right now with a new cultural crowd and creative and commercial initiatives including Caterina Portas’ remarkable brand A Vida Portuguesa, the LX Factory and Village Underground, The Time Out Mercado da Ribeira, or the recent installation of the ARCO art fair (18 – 21 May 2017).
Hotel Valverde, located on the prestigious Lisbon’s Champs-Elysée – Avenida da Liberdade – is without doubt the city’s best hotel. Very central – Gucci or the hip Embaixada Concept store are only five minutes from the hotel – it is easily reachable from the airport and the Oriente train station. The centre is at walking distance and the main attractions – pastel de nata shops, miradouros, museums – too. For theatre-lovers, the Tivoli theatre is only five minutes from the hotel.
Featuring a sumptuous 19th century heritage façade and dark blue curtain marquees, the Valverde – which used to host private offices – features 25 rooms ranging from Classic and Deluxe bedrooms, Junior Suites to the amazing top-floor Avenida and Valverde suites. Each bedroom is painted in a different colour to reflect Portugal’s aesthetics and celebrate the colourful tiles and houses of Portugal. And it’s not the only reference to Portuguese culture.
Exhibitions catalogues from the Serralves and Gulbenkian Foundations can be found in the very charming lobby and in the rooms. Art-Deco inspired furniture, photography publications, travel guides, parquet floor, huge black and white-tiled bathrooms and luxury products make the room very comfortable, calm and enjoyable. Views over the Castelo de São Jorge and typical streets complete the beauty of the interior design.
The very professional young and dynamic staff wears Lacoste uniforms, a nod to Felipe Oliveira Baptista, the brand’s Portuguese artistic director. Adélia Carvalho, General Manager of the Hotel spoke to Art is Alive: “the service we offer is probably the biggest asset of the hotel. We want our guests to feel at home and the staff is highly trained to respond to each client’s demand. I’d also stress the design, the comfort, the gastronomy and the strategic location. We pay a lot of attention to these.”
Guests love the intimacy provided by the fantastic architecture and the hotel’s “boutiquy” and homely atmosphere. No surprise it’s been chosen by celebs and for fashion shoots by Vogue and Maxima. The clientele is a mixture of international businessmen, fashionistas, young entrepreneurs, people who like art de vivre for sure.
Interior designers José Pedro Vieira and Diogo Rosa Lã, previously commissioned by the successful Bairro Alto Hotel, have completely transformed the space into a cosy, charming venue displaying original and rich furniture, fabrics, ceramics, wood, artworks and accessories. It is an oasis of comfort and elegance, right in the middle of a busy avenue.
Adélia Carvalho also highlights the rich cultural programme offered by the hotel including fado nights, Sunday brunches and jazz concerts. They all take place in the fantastic Sítio restaurant, located on the below floor of the hotel which boasts a large heated swimming pool, probably one of the only pools in the area. That’s another huge advantage of Hotel Valverde.
This level invites guests to total relaxation thanks to the plants, the designers-arm chairs and sofas, the loungy music, the comfortable cushions and the lifestyle magazines and daily newspapers. Needless to say that the restaurant is also very chic and for guests who require more privacy, a small private room is available for private events and parties. The menu is simple yet excellent with traditional Portuguese courses and exquisite wines.
Hotel Valverde is simply the best with elegant, luxurious and stylish features, from the tiles of the main entrance, the beautiful furniture of the lobby to the staircase wallpaper and the paintings and prints displayed in the rooms. “We have a few other projects in the pipeline including increasing the capacity of Hotel Valverde. We’re also looking at another location that will please clients from around the world and VIPs” said Adélia.
